Philosophy:

 

Studio 517 exists to impart to its students not only a good foundation in piano (developing technic, music reading skills, versatility in playing a variety of styles and honing musical interpretation), but also and more importantly, a life-long love for piano and music.  Competitions/festivals are not our focus.  Relaxed yet committed to excellence, Studio 517's faculty wants to infuse passion into its students so that they play for the "sheer joy of it."   Two relaxed piano "sing-a-long" parties allow students to experience the joy of sharing music with others without the pressure to "perform."

I could tell you that I have been playing piano since I was four and this led to several years of dedicated studies culminating in a Bachelor of Music degree (Choral Education, Piano Performance) from Georgia State University on scholarship.  Perhaps it would be fun to know that I've been blessed to use my piano gifts in playing, leading and arranging vocally/instrumentally in worship arts in churches, vocal ensembles and more both in America and in Europe because that was totally cool.  I've had the blessing of teaching over seven years here in Austin and watching my students develop into competent, confident musicians.   Most of all, I want others to know that I am equally passionate about students playing not only with excellence but also simply for the "sheer joy of it."   Sharing music vs. performing, "owning" their studies and developing the discipline of practicing that always pays off and teaches perseverance and other skills they will need for life.
